Closures & Delays

COVID-19

El Paso and Teller County courts are still open and but are now operating on an emergency basis. Courthouse  visitors have been restricted  and many cases are now being rescheduled, although questions about specific court appearances should be directed to the division the case is assigned to. Division phone numbers can be accessed  here . Jurors are still ordered to honor their summons but may submit a  postponement request  if they are experiencing symptoms or are at risk for serious illness.

The Colorado Supreme Court has ordered that certain cases and court proceedings  may not  be suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. These include:

• Petitions for temporary civil protection orders and pennanent protection order hearings;

• Petitions for temporary emergency risk protection orders and hearings on emergency risk protection orders;

• Crim.P. Rule 5 advisement for incarcerated persons and the initial setting of bail;

• Revocation hearings on complaints to revoke probation involving an incarcerated defendant;

• Proceedings necessary to protect the constitutional rights of criminal defendants including bond-related matters and plea agreements for incarcerated individuals;

• Detention hearings for juvenile delinquency cases;

• Shelter hearings in dependency and neglect cases or other juvenile proceedings;

• Petitions for appointment of an emergency guardian and/or special conservator;

• Hearings on motions to restrict parenting time and parental abduction prevention; and

• Emergency mental health proceedings.

Every year, the Colorado Supreme Court publishes a set of model jury instructions that are used by most judges in Colorado. These instructions contain the elements of common criminal charges, defenses, and standards that a jury has to follow in reaching a verdict. Alcohol & Drug Treatment Classes

Alcohol and drug treatment classes are a typically required by the DMV to reinstate a license suspended due to an alcohol-related driving offense. They are also ordered as a statutory condition of any probationary sentence imposed by a Court. Colorado Ladders Program

The Office of Behavioral Heath certifies organizations authorized to provide alcohol treatment and therapy throughout Colorado. The Colorado Ladders program offers an easy-to-use referral network for locating an authorized provider. You can access that network  here .

Ignition Interlock Device

The Department of Motor Vehicles has authorized four vendor to install ignition interlock devices in Colorado. You can find the list along with their individual websites  here .

License Restraints & Express Consent

The Department of Revenue website provides information about Colorado’s Express Consent law. This includes timelines for license restraints associated with DUI/DWAI arrests which can be viewed  here .

MADD Victim Impact Panel

The MADD victim impact panel is a required condition of probation for almost all first DUI/DWAI offenses. The  MADD website  lists victim impact panel times and locations throughout Colorado. The class costs $50 and lasts about 2 hours.

SR-22 Insurance

SR-22 insurance is a document your insurance company files with the state to prove you’re covered by the minimum car insurance required to legally drive. The insurance provider then reports any lapses in coverage to the DMV. Most insurance carries provide SR-22 insurance for an additional fee. If yours does not, you can compare rates  here .
